about

In 1985 my sister and I went with my Dad to buy an Alfo Romeo from his friend. Driving off there was a tape left in the player, Brothers In Arms by Dire Straits. I was 9 and Money For Nothing introduced me to the electric guitar. A couple of years later the same mate gave me my first guitar, a Hofner acoustic, and off I went on the road of music. Dire Straits were my first band and through the love of Mark Knopfler's guitar I persevered on my Hofner. Hand in Hand is one of the first songs I learned to play and sing when I was about 14.

Cue July 2021 and Gareth is visiting from Pennsylvania. We always make some music when we get together, and so decide to record two tunes from the Making Movies album in my front room with our friend Rob on piano. So, we record Romeo & Juliet and Hand In Hand live, as a kind of virtual 7" single harking back to 1980. Romeo and Juliet is the A side and Hand in Hand is the B side.

The artwork, by Kirsten McTernan, is based on that idea of a 7 inch single from the early 80s - black and white photos on the yellowing sleeve. I wanted it to look a bit like the Making Movies cassette I used to listen to with my granddad in the car when I was about 10. I still have the tape!
